Pantry Butler ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website at pantrybutler.aiand the Pantry Butler application (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.

By accessing or using the Service, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the Service immediately.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

  • Account Information: Name, email address, and password when you create an account.
  • Household Information: Household name, postal code, household size, dietary restrictions, and language preference.
  • Receipt Data: Photos of grocery receipts that you upload. We use optical character recognition (OCR) to extract store name, items purchased, prices, and purchase date.
  • Shopping Lists: Items you add to your shopping list, including custom items and quantities.
  • Payment Information: When you subscribe to Smart Pantry, payment processing is handled by Stripe. We do not store your credit card number, bank account number, or other payment instrument details on our servers.
  • Communications: Feedback, support requests, and any other information you provide when contacting us.
  • Phone Number: If you opt in to receive text messages from us, we collect your mobile phone number.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage Data: Pages visited, features used, timestamps, and interactions with the Service.
  • Device Information: Browser type, operating system, device type, and screen resolution.
  • Cookies and Similar Technologies: We use cookies and local storage to maintain your session, remember your preferences (theme, language, filter selections), and improve your experience. See Section 7 for details.

2.3 Information from Third Parties

  • Deal Data: We retrieve weekly grocery deals from third-party sources (such as store flyers) to match against your purchasing history. This data is publicly available and does not contain personal information.
  • Product Information: We use publicly available product databases to enrich product names, images, and nutritional information.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the Service
  • Track your grocery inventory and predict when items need restocking
  • Match weekly deals from your local stores to products you purchase
  • Generate personalized shopping lists and recipe suggestions
  • Process your subscription and manage billing through Stripe
  • Send transactional emails (account verification, password reset, expiry alerts)
  • Send promotional communications, including text messages, if you have opted in (see Section 5)
  • Analyze usage patterns to improve and develop new features
  • Detect, prevent, and address technical issues or abuse
  • Comply with legal obligations

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share your information in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service Providers: We use third-party services to operate the platform, including Supabase (database and authentication), Stripe (payment processing), Vercel (hosting), Amazon Web Services (receipt OCR), and Resend (transactional email). These providers access your information only as necessary to perform their services and are bound by their own privacy policies.
  • Household Members: If you are part of a household, other members of that household can see shared data such as inventory, shopping lists, deals, and restock predictions.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose your information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

Aggregate and De-Identified Data: We may use aggregate, anonymized, or de-identified data that cannot reasonably be used to identify you for analytics, research, and product improvement purposes.

5. Text Messaging (SMS/MMS)

Pantry Butler may offer text message notifications for features such as deal alerts, expiry reminders, restock notifications, and account updates. By providing your mobile phone number and opting in, you consent to receive recurring automated text messages from Pantry Butler.

  • Opt-In: You must provide express written consent before receiving any text messages. Consent is not a condition of purchase.
  • Message Frequency: Message frequency varies based on your notification preferences. Typically 2-10 messages per month.
  • Message and Data Rates: Standard message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier.
  • Opt-Out: You may opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message or by updating your notification preferences in Settings. You will receive a one-time confirmation message upon opt-out.
  • Help: Reply HELP to any message for support information, or contact us at hello@pantrybutler.ai.
  • Supported Carriers: Major US carriers are supported. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
  • No Sharing: We do not sell, rent, lease, or share your mobile phone number or the contents of text messages with any third party for promotional or marketing purposes.

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal, accounting, or reporting obligations.

Receipt images are processed for data extraction and are not stored permanently. Extracted data (items, prices, dates) is retained as part of your purchase history.

7. Cookies and Local Storage

We use the following technologies to operate the Service:

  • Essential Cookies: Required for authentication, session management, and security. These cannot be disabled.
  • Local Storage: Used to store your preferences (theme, language, filter selections, cookie consent status). This data never leaves your device.
  • Analytics: We may use privacy-respecting analytics to understand how the Service is used. We do not use Google Analytics or any tracking service that builds advertising profiles.

You can manage cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may prevent you from using the Service.

8. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest
  • Row-level security policies ensuring household data isolation
  • Secure authentication with email verification
  • PCI-compliant payment processing through Stripe
  • Regular security reviews and dependency auditing

No method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate personal information.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your personal information and account.
  • Portability: Request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.

California Residents (CCPA): You have the right to know what personal information we collect, request its deletion, and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.
